Description
I have not seen a butterfly quite like this one before in my garden in Ohio! It was rather large compared to most Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterflies. What really threw me though, of course, is the color! I know females are usually dark (almost black,) but I had not seen one that looked like this! Before I posted it here, I wanted to be sure what it was, so I had it identified at Butterflies and Moths of North America (BAMONA) Sure enough, they say it is an Eastern. I would love to know why it looks like this, but I will have to research that when I have a bit more time. Until I can give you more info on it though, I hope you enjoy this shot!
Most people know this butterfly! The Eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) is a species of swallowtail butterfly native to North America. it is common in the Eastern United States and can be found in many different habitats. It flies from spring to fall, during which it produces two to three broods. Adults feed on the nectar of many species of flowers, mostly from those of the Apocynaceae, Asteraceae, and Fabaceae families. It is a fairly large butterfly with a wingspan measuring 7.9 to 14 cm (3.1 to 5.5 in). The male is yellow with four black "tiger stripes" on each fore wing. Females may be either yellow or black, making them dimorphic. The yellow morph is similar to the male, but with a conspicuous band of blue spots along the hindwing, while the dark morph is almost completely black. This one seems to me to be a female which is a cross between the dark morph and the yellow with the beautiful blue bands.
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
