Description
This is a square format shot of a lovely little American Lady butterfly.
American Lady butterflies, (Vanessa virginiensis,) are members of the Nymphalidae family. They are a medium sized butterfly, about 1 3/4 - 2 5/8 inches. I am always amazed at how these delicate creatures make it through such harsh winters and just seem to magically appear as soon as there are a few nice days strung together. How do they do that? The upperside of the wings has an uneven brown, yellow, and orange pattern. The forewing has a black patch, and a small white spot in the orange field below the patch with a white bar at the leading edge of the forewing. The underside of hindwing has two large eyespots. Winter form is smaller and paler than the summer form which tends to be larger with brighter coloring. This one in early Spring was certainly a bright and cheering welcoming sign of things to come!
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
