Description
American Painted Lady butterflies are so well named! They certainly look like they have spent some time in the morning getting pretty before going out to shop for some sweet nectar! This is a close-up of the hindwing, with the other side of the forewing revealing itself to be a bright orange color. Large spots on the wings are designed to appear to be large eyes, which just might scare off a predator thinking of eating them! The under side of the American Painted Lady's wings are lovely shades of browns and tans with hints of blues and rust-oranges. The upper side can be bright oranges with browns and black.
