Description
I see balanced rocks many times in beautiful locations.....many times in lush and peaceful garden settings. They remind me that man has had a hand in this beauty, but it is still completely dependent on the beauty of the rocks and the laws of nature.
Rock balancing can be a performance art, a spectacle, or a devotion, depending upon the interpretation by its audience. Essentially, it involves placing some combination of rock or stone in arrangements which require patience and sensitivity to generate, and which appear to be physically impossible while actually being only highly improbable.
There are different styles of Balancing rocks:
Pure balance - each rock in near-point balance
Counterbalance - lower rocks depend on the weight of upper rocks to maintain balance
Balanced stacking - rocks lain flat upon each other to great height
Free style - mixture of the two above; may include arches and sandstone.
These rocks are in the garden of dear relatives who we drive long hours to visit. Their home is over a hundred years old and they commune with nature in their peaceful garden filled with wild animals, a vegetable garden, flower gardens, Bonsai trees and a Basset Hound named Annie! Occasionally it is overrun with boisterous daughters and son and spouses and grand children. All of these things balanced in perfect harmony, just like these balancing rocks.
It is a place where you feel heaven on earth.
