Description
It's mid-October in Ohio, a bright blue sky day with a chill in the air, but warmth in the sun's rays. My grand-daughter and I could not stand being inside and so went out into the fresh Fall air. To her great delight there were a dozen or more butterflies also enjoying the beautiful day. She has a special gift with butterflies. They seem to know she is not going to hurt them. She can walk right up to one and stand with her lovely little face inches away. What a wonderful view she has in those moments. Many times she will wave her little hand at them, which is usually when the butterfly decides to fly away. My heart is just so full watching her dance around in the bright sunshine with butterflies fluttering around her head! Life is a gift! To everyone reading this I wish you a world filled with wonder . . . and beautiful butterflies!
This is a "Common Buckeye" butterfly, which has been anything but common in my Ohio garden for the past few years. Thankfully they have returned in great numbers in 2019! This image is in a square format.
The common buckeye is a medium-sized butterfly with several large, conspicuous round eyespots. Adults have a wingspan range of 1 1/2" to just under 3". Females are generally larger than males and have more rounded forewings. The upper surface of the forewing has a broad white post-median band that touches and often encircles a single large eyespot. The forewing cell has two prominent orange bars. The upper surface of the hindwing has two large eyespots and a broad orange submarginal band. The undersides of the hindwings are seasonally variable. Individuals produced in the wet season (summer) have tan to brown ventral hindwings with more noticeable pattern elements. Individuals produced in the dry season (winter) are a rich reddish-brown. This shot was taken in Ohio during a very dry October. It amazes me the great variety in appearance from one Buckeye to another; some seeming to be quite drab, while another is radiant!
Named for its conspicuous target-shaped eyespots, the common buckeye, Junonia coenia Hübner, is one of the most distinctive and readily-identifiable North American butterflies. It inhabits a wide variety of open, sunny landscapes including old fields, roadsides, utility corridors, gardens, parks, yards, fallow agricultural land, scrubs, pine savannas, and weedlots. (Maybe I have the weeds in my garden to thank for all of the Buckeye visitors I have had this year!) One person's weeds are a caterpillar's sustenance!
