Description
I was out in my yard letting the dog have a run when this wonderful visitor came gliding in front of my face and landed on tall grass in my garden. He balanced quite easily and for quite some time, seeming to bathe in the warm sun that was illuminating him. This gave me time to run in and grab my camera. He was very patient with me and let me click away, until my puppy said enough is enough and in we went!
I had never noticed a Dragonfly that looked quite like this one, but quickly found its name because it makes perfect sense; Black Saddlebags Skimmer Dragonfly!
The Odonata order of insects encompasses Dragonflies and Damselflies. There are over 5,500 species recognized in North America and over 450 of those are found in The USA and Canada. Dragonflies are more common of the two types.
You will find Dragonflies and Damselflies around fresh bodies water on almost any sunny summer day! As an insect they have six legs that grab prey and in this shot are used of course, to hang on to grass and reeds. Colors and size vary with some being up to 5" long. I would guess this one is about 4-5" in wingspan. Their bulging eyes are set on the sides of their heads and are composed of thousands of honeycomb-shaped lens, giving them excellent vision. The wings have fine vein patterns.
I love the way you can tell most Dragonflies from Damselflies. The Dragonfly rests like many men sit with wings spread wide open. While Damselflies sit like a proper lady with her wings (knees) held tightly together. At least that helps me to remember which is which!
This particular species is called a Skimmer, with its body being shorter than its wingspan. They have two large black spots on their wings that resemble backpacks, but actually do not hold anything, but they certainly do make for some interesting imaginings if they could!
I really appreciate you taking time to look at my artwork. Thank you so much!
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
