Description
These old-fashioned Bleeding Hearts have been in my family's gardens for as long as I can remember. They always take me back to thinking about my family heritage and how my great-great grandmother must have also loved these little beauties in her garden so long ago. They have been transplanted from one garden to the next as our family left the farm and lived in city and then suburbs. But I love that we can still bring some of that old farm and be reminded every Spring and feel that connection.
The proper name for these is Lamprocapnos spectabilis, which makes it easy to see why people through time have come up with more creative names, ones easier to remember and ones that bring a smile to the viewer. Names like Venus's car, Lady in a bath, Dutchman's trousers, Lyre-flower or, of course, old-fashioned Bleeding Hearts.
I have read that this perennial is actually a native plant of eastern Asia, from Siberia south to Japan, but appropriately it grows well in the Heartland of the US!
If you call these by a different name, please, write that in a comment. It is fun to see all the clever names this one plant has!
