Description
One beautiful Fall day I went to the Columbus Zoo with just my camera for company. After raising four kids and taking many grandchildren, it was really a unique experience to just go and focus on whatever I wanted to without interruption! I quietly walked up to the enclosure where this little Bobcat was relaxing in the warmth of the Autumn sun. What a beautiful and regal creature! I have a real fondness for these cats because I went to Ohio University and we are the BOBCATS! I have two versions of this image. This one is a sepia type black and white and I will also post the full color version.
I am very sad that these beautiful wild creatures are recently in danger in Ohio. ODNR Division of Wildlife is considering a proposal to allow BOBCAT HUNTING. This would be done by setting out traps. With only a $5 fee to trap a bobcat, almost every trapper will go after one. That’s tremendous pressure on a population of unknown size, just delisted in 2014. The bobcat population has never been trapped and are not wary of traps. In other words, they are a naive population. Bobcats are not difficult to trap and with that many trappers in the field many worry the quota will likely be surpassed on the first day.
Hunting and trapping can be a management tool to control over-populated species, such as deer. Opponents of the change say however that bobcats do not overpopulate. They do not cause nuisance problems more than occasionally killing a chicken. Every carnivore in the woods kills free-ranging chickens. The problems are not great enough to warrant control of the bobcat population. I worry about traps catching other creatures and find them to be an extremely inhumane thing to do to any animal!
If you would like more information on this issue, you can go to Save Ohio's Bobcats II on Facebook. The ODNR will accept public comment through March 5, 2018.
Thank you so much for spending your time looking at my work. I really appreciate you it. Thank you so much!
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
