Description
I have a lot of bees in my Ohio garden. This big guy was relaxing on my step one afternoon in early October. I think it is called a Rusty-patched bumblebee - a familiar fuzzy pollinator.
It has been proposed to be listed as a federally endangered species, according to a recent news release from the Xerces Society. This organization says these bees are "not only an important pollinator of prairie wildflowers, but also of cranberries, blueberries, apples, alfalfa, and numerous other crops. . . Once common from Minnesota to Maine, and south through the Appalachians, this species has been lost from 87% of its historic range since the late 1990's."
That is scary stuff and statistics that we should all pay attention to! We gardeners can help by growing native plants and limiting the use of pesticides. . . . and appreciate the beauty of these wonderful workers!
