Description
My garden is filled with Bumblebees! They are a very happy group and completely ignore my presence. They are far too busy to be bothered by little ol' me! They seem to really enjoy my Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana.) I have read that this flower got its name because you can bend the individual flowers in any direction. Unfortunately, this plant is not so obedient in the garden, where it can spread quite aggressively, by rhizomes. It has taken over a pretty good size of one corner of the garden.
Obedient Plant has another common name, False Dragonhead, which likely came about because of the flowers' resemblance to snapdragons.
I love the sculptural form of this plant. The white, pink and lavender flowers form along spikes, in four neat vertical rows, and begin opening from the bottom up.
Common Eastern Bumblebees are important pollinators of many plant species. They are certainly interesting and extremely important creatures to our lives. Did you know only female bumble bees have stingers? We know that bumble bees eat pollen and nectar, but I was shocked to also read that they also eat bee poop! Maybe TMI!
Bumble bee colonies die at the end of each growing season. The only survivor being the queen, who then starts a new colony in the spring. This is different from honey bee colonies, where the queen and some members of the colony survive throughout the winter.
Happily, honey bees make lots of honey, enough for bee keepers to collect for us to eat, but Bumble bees only make a small amount of honey, which they eat themselves.
Bees are threatened by habitat loss, but you can help! Take action to protect bees by planting a pollinator garden.
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
