Description
This is a soft and gentle image of a very tiny and delicate butterfly known as an Eastern Tailed Blue Butterfly. I like how the little beauty is balancing on a white Buddleia (butterfly bush) bloom and how this image balances by use of a bokeh background of the garden meadow.
Commonly known as Eastern Tailed Blue, the proper name is Cupido comyntas, of the family, Lycaenidae and subfamily, Polyommatinae. They are very tiny with about 1" for wing span. To Identify an Eastern Tailed Blue look for one narrow tail on hindwing. The upperside of male is an iridescent blue. In the summer, females are uniformly brown, but in the spring females are a bit smaller with much blue at the wing bases. This image was taken in August of 2016. The underside of the hindwing is a pale gray with a black bar, distinct black spots, and three large orange spots at the outer margin near tail. I love how the antennae seem to be stripped black and white!
