Description
George Wood was my dad. He was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1928. When he and his brother were in their late teens, they caught butterflies and mounted them in beautiful displays. Many were framed images with soft blue cotton skies and dried plants with one or two butterflies permanently sealed in these lovely scenes. Dad knew the names of every butterfly and bird we ever saw together. He loved their beauty. He loved nature and the earth.
His love spread to me and in 2011 when I spotted a Zebra Swallowtail in my garden, I was completely hooked on butterflies! I started trying to capture with my camera all of the beauty that my dad had once actually captured (although he felt a bit guilty about that in later years!)
I took thousands of butterfly photos. when I would visit mom and dad at their retirement home, she would look at them and say how pretty they were. Dad would study each one and tell me their names and what he loved about each. In 2012, Dad told me he wanted to draw 4 of my butterfly images. I was delighted, but not too hopeful since his hands trembled so badly, but I am presenting here the four works of art my dad did at the age of 84.
I love that I can now photograph his artwork of my photographs and share them with you.
On August 13, 2013 he had a massive stroke that took away his ability to speak and he died three months later. Whenever we see a butterfly, we can not help but see Dad!

What a beautiful story, thank you for sharing it. It makes this picture even more special. I'm crazy about butterflies also. And I grow quite a few plants just with them in mind ( especially passionflowers)
