Description
This square format is a close-up of the hindwing of an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. This shows the veins and colorful scales that help to form the butterfly's wings. butterfly wings are made of very thin layers of a hardened protein called chitin and on top of these chitin layers are thousands of tiny scales. These scales form the various patterns that differentiate one species from another. They also help to protect and insulate the butterfly. It is important not to touch a butterfly because damaging these scales can be quite harmful to the butterfly.
