As I walked through the bare winter trees of our ravine, I kept noticing this cute little bird. Once it landed, it seemed happy to pose for a while, seeming to be in no particular hurry. I wasn't sure what kind of bird I was looking at, thought maybe a Phoebe, but I'm now pretty positive on my identification of an Eastern Wood Pewee. They are less brown, with stronger wingbars, than a phoebe. Identifying flycatchers can be confusing, but pewees are grayer overall, with longer wings, than other flycatchers.

They live in forests and eat insects. They make nests in trees that evidently are pretty difficult to spot. These small flycatchers perch on dead branches in mid-canopy.

The Eastern Wood-Pewee is inconspicuous until it opens its bill and gives its unmistakable slurred call: pee-a-wee! These little cuties have actually named themselves with their characteristic sound of Eastern summers.

No matter how many creatures you see and know, there are so many more to learn about and appreciate!
