Description
I was walking my puppy dog on a cold January morning in Ohio when I noticed this leaf on the sidewalk. I kept walking, but also kept thinking about this unusual leaf, so much so, that I finally turned around and went back to pick it up. What caught my eye about this particular leaf was its color . . . almost white with very faint hints of emerald and moss shades of green. I carefully carried it the rest of our walk. When we got home, I went about taking many different shots of this little beauty. I loved its subtly and demure kind of feel. In this image I wanted to really accentuate the beauty of those soft colors of this delicate leaf.

I believe this is a leaf from an American Sweetgum tree(Liquidambar styraciflua.)
This is a large tree of Ohio's forests. The distinctively lobed leaves are star-shaped. The fruit also is distinctive. Each of the round seed balls, about 1" in diameter, contains many beaked capsules. The tree grows on bottomlands and moist to wet upland flats in Ohio's southernmost counties. In other parts of the state it has been planted extensively as an ornamental tree.
It has been used for furniture, veneer, cabinets, interior finish and various kinds of woodenware. Several kinds of birds feed on the seeds that emerge from the horn-tipped seed capsules.
