Description
The Gray Hairstreak butterfly is an immigrant to Ohio from the south. Hairstreaks are quite tiny butterflies and you may not even notice one! It may be able to overwinter during mild winters, but that is unusual and so these are most common in southern Ohio during late summer and fall. So I guess I was pretty lucky to find one in my garden in central Ohio. They seem to love fields and open areas, but this one really seemed to enjoy my tall purple verbena flowers.
These flowers really attract butterflies. They seed themselves each year and grow so thick that by the end of fall, I spend several days pulling them out. Their stems are quite rough and I usually have some painful scratches on my arms that last several days after this annual chore. The proper name is Verbena bonariensis, but is also referred to as purpletop vervain, clustertop vervain, Argentinian vervain , tall verbena, or pretty verbena. It is a member of the verbena family cultivated as a flowering annual or herbaceous perennial plant. In USA horticulture, it is also known by the ambiguous names "purpletop."
