Description
I was walking my new puppy back along the wetlands trail, when I thought I saw something. In the bright sunshine it was hard to make out if this shape was part of the tree sticking out of the swampy water or a bird. I tried to walk closer (which is difficult with a puppy and crinkly fall leaves!) I was lucky to discover this branch was indeed a Great Blue Heron who did not seem to mind our getting closer and my fumbling with getting my camera out of the bag and set up for a few shots.
I have several poses in the images I captured . . . it was almost as if he was a working model and giving me different looks! My pup got a bit bored and I had to keep up with our walk after just a few minutes, but I was sure happy that I was given this serendipitous photo shoot on a beautiful October day in Ohio!
The great blue heron is the largest heron in North America. It stands three to four feet tall and has a wingspan of almost six feet. It has blue-gray feathers on most of its body and a plume of feathers on its chest and back.
It has long legs with rusty-red thighs and a long, straight, dagger-like yellowish bill that turns orange at the beginning of the breeding season. Adults have white on the top of their heads and long black plumes above their eyes.
