Description
This image is a combination of four shots taken of a Great Egret coming in for a landing in the protected wetlands behind our home in Ohio. It's a really wonderful place in the heart of a busy suburb and filled with wildlife and activity! The original shots had a very busy wooded background and I thought the plain black gave full attention to the grace of this lovely creature!
John Switzer wrote a wonderful article for our Columbus Dispatch (Sunday June 4, 2017) entitled:
"Exotic great egret never fails to amaze."
Some of the new information I got from reading his article is:
"The great egret is used in the symbol for the National Audubon Society, which worked to stop its killing for feathers that were used in women's hats. The birds fly north from tropical areas in the spring to breed. . .
In the late 1800s to early 1900s, plume-hunters nearly wiped out the birds to get feathers to adorn women's hats. Women thought they looked stylish with those plumes on their bonnets, but I am of the opinion that the plumes look better on the birds." Amen John!
"Jim McCormac, a bird expert, said hunters killed 5 million snowy egrets and other species a year for their plumes. He said hunters sold the plumes for $32 an ounce. That made the birds nearly worth their weight in gold."
Luckily, the National Audubon Society intervened with a campaign to save these wonderful creatures! Mr. McCormac noted that one Audubon warden was actually killed trying to protect them from hunters.
Mr. Switzer also noted that these large birds (3-4 feet tall) build their nests high in the trees, which is where I see them in our back wetlands area. I wonder if this was an adaptation to deal with the great threat against them.
I cannot think of a better way to end talking about Great Egrets than by one more quote from Mr. Switzer:
"I can't imagine a world without something so gorgeous as a great egret." Me neither!
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
