Description
There are two types of plants that I almost never pull up when they seed and decide to grow in inconvenient spots in my yard. The first is Columbine. Whenever I look at a Columbine plant or bloom, I say a silent prayer for all those who have suffered from that horrible day many years ago, at a High School with that beautiful name and an ugly past. It seems a bit silly, but it was my promise way back then to never forget them and I never have.
The second is Milkweed. If you have looked through my images, you have probably realized how much I love the earth and especially butterflies. I just read yesterday how someone compared them to flying flowers who cannot sing. Maybe they can't, but they make my heart sing. . . and so, milkweed is a very important plant to me. Without Milkweed plants there will be no Monarch butterflies. Monarchs lay their eggs on Milkweed and their caterpillars feed only off those plants. This diet helps their survival in making them poisonous to their predators. The plant and therefore the butterflies are disappearing at an alarming rate. I support www.MonarchWatch.org and urge everyone to visit that site.
The Environmental Defense Fund is another group that I support for the many battles they fight to protect our Earth. One project EDF is working on is with Golf courses to encourage them to plant wild flowers, especially milkweed on the ares of land around the playing surfaces. U.S. golf course cover about 2.5 million acres of green space of which 100,000 are not actually golfed on. EDF has teamed up with the Audubon International to create Monarchs in the Rough to help restore natural areas for Monarchs and many other butterflies and creatures to live. And so I celebrate Milkweed: Green Life!
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
