Description
It was a hot humid September morning in Ohio. The River birch next to our house had just been trimmed pretty severely so as to no longer touch any part of the structure. I went out to survey the change. I mourned the lack of deep shade, but enjoyed seeing more parts to the tree...including a Nuthatch and two Chickadees jumping from limb to limb. Then I spotted this quiet little creature under the eave. He was very high up and I couldn't really make out what kind of butterfly he was. When I was able to examine my shots on the computer I was excited to see that this is a Hackberry Butterfly, one which I had yet to photograph. For those of you who have not read my postings through the years, I have an old booklet from my dear dad called 'Common Butterflies and Skippers of Ohio.' I caught his love of butterflies and have spent many years trying to capture each species shown in this little book. Since his death a couple of years ago, it has become a treasure and a gift that keeps him near.
According to the little booklet, these are somewhat common and if you see one, you will probably see many. Well, maybe things have changed through the years, or maybe I just am not good at spotting them. It also states that they are so attracted to the color white that if you wear a white t-shirt they just may land on you, "making them difficult to photograph." I laid out a white sheet on the ground hoping to coax him down from his perch on high, but instead he just flew away.
So, I worked with the shot I had. Luckily, our soffits do not look this bad! I have added texture to give this a minimal abstract kind of quality. I hope you keep your eyes open and find the beauty of nature all around you!

Such a beauty. And so enjoyed reading about your butterfly quest. My son and I just had two butterfly "shoots" and I can now appreciate how difficult it is to get that perfect shot! F/L++

Hahaha, yep it takes a lot of bad shots to get a good one! Thanks, Nancy! That sounds like a really fun time!
