Description
It was with great excitement that I discovered this lovely Monarch caterpillar. I was puzzled because I found him clinging to the underside of a Columbine leaf, not Milkweed. I went out several times throughout the day and took several pictures. I assumed he would be gone each time I checked back, but he stayed.
A couple of times when I went out a Monarch would be in the area flying around. I started imagining that she was the mommy of this little baby. Was she flying around trying to protect this vulnerable little guy? Did he know what he was doing? Was he ok?
I can identify with that mommy's concern. Even though my children are grown and have babies of their own, the worry and the hovering still seems to linger. In fact, it is multiplied by umbrellas of worry for their husbands and grandchildren now too! I seem to spend much of each day trying to change things in the world, trying to make things safer, kinder, trying to change the trajectory of trouble swirling around us. I am trying to make the future safe for when I can no longer be there to help and comfort them.
There is always something to do to try to improve the world, but in truth it is very difficult to bring about change. And bad things seem to keep happening, but hope is the fuel to keep going!
The important things: love of family and community, Indivisible friendships new and old, compassion for strangers and appreciation for the gifts of the Earth, all keep me going. These things all fill me with Hope. Like that mommy butterfly, I fly about with concern and love, but I have to realize what I can and cannot do. I fly on the wind of Faith and the wings of Hope.
This little caterpillar is now comfy inside a lovely green chrysalis hanging onto this Columbine leaf. I continue to check on his well-being and hope he stays safe. Each day I hope the world gets brighter instead of darker. More loving and less hateful. Each morning I rise with Hope in my heart . . . and one of those hopes is that I see this little caterpillar emerge from his little home and fly off as a beautiful Monarch butterfly!
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
