Description
Sometimes a lot can be accomplished by just standing still. Life seems chaotic and non-stop. Problems and troubles can really start to weigh one down . . . and that is when I go out into my garden . . . and stand still. I listen. I look. I drink in the atmosphere of this beautiful world. Problems begin to feel smaller. My mom's favorite saying was, "This too shall pass." Peace will slowly descend and then little gifts from the universe will appear.
My Ohio garden may appear to many a bit overgrown. I love wildflowers and anything that attracts birds, bees or butterflies. Early in the Spring I tend to scatter seeds and try to keep the little seedlings watered until they are strong enough to be left on their own. Now, in early August, I enjoy the beauty of those little tiny seeds as they burst into bloom. They fill in spaces between the hardy perennials. And so, I stand out in my garden and wait.
Butterflies flutter around, trying to coax me into chasing them about. There are a couple of Monarchs, Pearl Crescents, a black Swallowtail, an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and another pair of Giant Swallowtail butterflies on this particular day. So I stand still and wait. I know those bright Zinnia flowers are too much for most of them to ignore. Suddenly, a lovely little Hummingbird hovers right in front of me. She hovers, looking right at me. We seem to come to an agreement pretty quickly as she goes about her business drinking from flower after flower and I stand as quietly as I can clicking my shutter as fast as possible.
Occasionally, one of the many butterflies will flutter over and there were times I just stand and enjoy this scene in front of me.
This is a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris.) The male has a ruby-red throat, a white collar, an emerald green back and a forked tail, while the female has a green back and tail feathers that are banded white, black and grey-green.
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
