Description
Freezing rain covered Ohio roads, yards, sidewalks and trees. The morning was cold and damp with the air still thick with moisture. It was very quiet except for the crunching of my footsteps and the cracking of branches as they snapped from the weight of the ice encasing them . . . and then more crackling as the branches hit the frozen ground sounding like fragile pieces of glass breaking. The thin layer of ice that had formed around each branch broke into small half tubes and were scattered like candy from a pinata. Cold drops of water dripped off the remaining branches overhead as the day warmed ever so slightly. Big drops dripping from the trees poked holes into the ice crystals and made such beautiful patterns.
This is a macro shot of one of those ice formations. . . . within an hour, all of this was gone and the ground sloshed beneath my feet.
