Description
Graphium Antheus is the scientific name for this beauty whose common name is "Large striped swordtail" butterfly. The large striped swordtail, is a species of butterfly in the family Papilionidae (swallowtails), found in tropical and sub-Saharan Africa. The wingspan is 65–70 mm in males and 70–75 mm in females.
I love this stunning butterfly. It reminds me of one of my favorite butterflies that is found here in Ohio, the Zebra Swallowtail, which is black and white (with light blue legs.) I found this little lovely at the Franklin Park Conservatory. It is missing one of its tails which does not really affect it in any way. Those tails are specially designed to break off and allow the butterfly to escape if some predator grabs hold there! So looks like this one had a close call of some sort. I appreciate imperfection and the beauty of that. We all have our battle scars as we go through life, but we are all still beautiful.
This was taken at the Franklin Park Conservatory on Sept 11, 2019, at their annual exhibit called Butterflies and Blooms. It is such a wonderful way to spend time (although hot!) in a Greenhouse filled with wonderful plants and butterflies everywhere! The delight in children's faces AND grown-up's never fails to bring me joy!
I really appreciate you taking time to look at my artwork. Thank you so much!
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
