Description
This is a portrait of Leaonaro da Vinci by my dad, George Wood, inspired by a self-portrait in red chalk created by Da Vinci sometime around the years 1510-1515. I am not sure when dad drew this, but I cannot remember a time without it. I have been lucky enough to have it in my home for the past 30 years and it holds a very special memory for me in addition to it being a gift from dad.
One day I was carrying one of my little girls around the room where this was on the wall. She was sad about something and I was comforting her . . . she was about 2 years old. Suddenly she pointed to this picture and said, "God." in a very matter of fact way. I was really surprised because she really wasn't talking a lot then and I don't know that she had ever said God before. Every time I look at this wonderful artwork by my dad I think of him . . . and I think of Him! . . . (although I progressively think maybe She!) . . .:)
Leonardo da Vinci was born in Vinci, Italy April 1, 1452 and died at 67 years old on May 2, 1519 of natural causes. He was a very gifted man, including being an artist, inventor, architect, engineer, and a scientist who studied and drew human anatomy. He was curious and did so much in 67 years! He may be best known as the painter of the Mona Lisa.
