Description
I can identify many trees, thanks to working with my daughters through their elementary school projects year after year. But I was stumped by some trees that are planted at the park my pup and I take frequent walks through. Luckily, one still has the tag on it; London Plane. Hmmm, I wonder what that will look like? Then I forgot to look it up when I got back home. A few day later, my son-in-law called and said they were having trees planted at their new home . . . the nursery guy suggested a London Plane . . . did I know anything about those? Well! Then I had to research this.
Turns out, I have been walking past London Planes all the time, but thinking they were Sycamore trees!! The London Plane is of hybrid origin – it is the offspring of two different species, the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and the Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis). These two types of trees were separated until the 17th century, when John Tradescant the Younger, a botanist and gardener (as was his father – John Tradescant the Elder, that is), came to the colonies in the early part of that century and in 1636 took the American sycamore to England. Evidently it was love at first sight between the American and European trees and now we get to enjoy the London Plane.
It is very similar to the giant Sycamores, but smaller. The sycamore canopy can have a spread of 75 to 100 feet, while the London plane tree canopy grows only 65 to 80 feet wide. American sycamores generally have a white, and commonly bone-white, tone to the underbark that is exposed from the peeling away of the outer bark layers, while the London plane's underbark will have a yellow or green tinge. I do love the pure white bark of a Sycamore against a bright blue sky! The texture of this particular street tree really grabbed my attention and so I circled back around after the dog walk and took my camera!
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
