Description
I first saw these flowers in my dear Mother-in-law's garden many years ago. I was really a novice gardener and she had become a Master Gardener after her children left home, so she was a big inspiration and source of so much information through the years. I will always remember with deep fondness our walks and talks through her garden and mine. It was a wonderful peaceful connection we shared.
These lovely little flowers have several names, I like to call them Love-in-a-Mist. . . . the botanical Latin name however is: Nigella damascena.
Nigella earns its common name of Love-in-a-Mist with a tangle of ferny, fennel like foliage that forms a mist around the flowers. Other common names are Nigella, Devil in the Bush, or Persian Jewel. I really cannot imagine why anyone would call these "Devil in the Bush".
Once you see Nigella in bloom, you will always recognize it by its unique mist of airy bracts and foliage. The foliage is ferny, the flowers are fluffy and the seed pods are intriguing. Best known for the vivid blue blossom variety, Nigella also blooms in purples, pinks and white.
My children and grandchildren have always been fascinated with the dried seed pods that form. They are great fun to pull apart and find black seeds within, which are sometimes called Black Cumin, are from a related plant, Nigella sativa.
So I love Love-in-a-Mist for many reasons . . . its carefree beauty and many memories with loved ones . . . . for me they truly are Love-in-a-Mist!
