Description
Columbus, Ohio has a large group of concerned citizens who are actively working to help Monarch butterflies survive. A Facebook group shares information about eggs found, caterpillar and chrysalis and or course, the thrill of Monarchs who take flight in our gardens! We religiously allow the milkweed plants to grow where ever they happen to sprout in our yards. Everyone tries to do their part and you can do yours!
Monarch butterflies are amazing creatures. Their story of migration is so unique and wonderful; spanning Mexico, the United States and into Canada! In the northern states, like Ohio, we can enjoy seeing Monarchs July to early October, but when fall approaches the butterflies migrate to warmer climates where they hibernate through the winter. They hibernate in Oyamel fir trees of Mexico or eucalyptus trees along the southern California coast. They are the only insect that travels 2,500 miles.
Each year four generations of Monarchs complete this circle cycle. The Monarchs that survived the winter hibernation start off towards the north in the Spring, mate, lay eggs and die. This next generation heads further north, but lives only about six weeks until laying eggs and dying. The second and third generation continue this cycle until finally reaching as far north as Canada. In September-October, the forth generation begins the journey south, but instead of living 6 weeks, these butterflies live four to five months. In the spring, they come out of hibernation and begin the amazing cycle again.
What wonderful creatures! We humans can help monarchs by providing them the plant they need to survive: the milkweed plant. It is a beautiful plant that usually grows in the wild, but civilization has reduced the numbers of Milkweed plants. If you have any space in your garden, please consider the addition of this plant and you can help the survival of this wonderful species.
