I have several pictures that I took one morning in my garden. This one really cracks me up! Both the Hummer and the Monarch are racing to that one Butterfly bush flower, even though there are literally hundreds of flowers for them to land on! I captured the Hummingbird in mid flight, but it almost looks like she is trying to stop because she sees that big butterfly coming in for a landing! In my head, I hear her thinking "whoa!!!! back up!" In fact, she kept coming and so did the butterfly. The image called Monarch on White Butterfly Bush was taken just seconds later, so I guess the big old scary butterfly won this round!

It was a very quiet morning late July. I was sitting in my screened porch working my usual Sudoku puzzle when I just seemed to hear a call to go outside. I took my camera and walked around for quite a while. I saw a bunny rabbit and took some pictures. I saw some cattails that I thought were cool looking and took more pictures. Finally I came back home and just stood for a few minutes looking at my garden. Suddenly I noticed an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail on a tall verbena flower. Then I saw another one. Then I saw a Monarch and soon another Monarch fluttered about. None of them seemed to want their pictures taken. They would light for just seconds and then fly off.

I got some exercise in chasing these guys all around my yard! Finally one Monarch discovered a white butterfly bush and kept returning to it. . . so I stood there and snapped some shots. To my great delight, this cute little Hummingbird also liked this specific flower and she and the Monarch played a game chasing each other away, trying to claim it for their own. They seemed to trade time and ended up sharing the wealth!

Butterfly bush (Buddleia davidii) is a beautiful, fast-growing, deciduous shrub with masses of blossoms—long, spiked trusses—that bloom from summer to autumn. Its flowers come in many colors, lavender-pink (mauve,) to white and dark purple cultivars..
