Description
I have a lot of tall Milkweed plants that have chosen to surround my mailbox. I worry that some of my neighbors aren't pleased with the wild look this gives. Last night, a couple walking by stopped and spent a few minutes looking at these plants. Finally the woman pulled out her phone and took a few pictures. I greeted them and asked if they were trying to figure out what kind of plant it was. She smiled excitedly and said that she knew it was Milkweed and was taking pictures of the Monarch caterpillars to show her son. She said he would be so excited to see this! So to my relief, they love my milkweed!
We had a nice conversation (from a safe distance) and then they continued their walk. I'm pretty sure you can guess what I did then! I ran inside to grab my camera and hope to share a few scenes from my Milkweed! By morning this guy had completely devoured this large leaf!
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!

Karen, this is a lovely image of a Monarch caterpillar. By the way, to save these magnificent butterflies, who cares what your neighbors think? I live on the edge of a restored Illinois prairie and often spend my time seeking out the elusive monarch caterpillar. They seem to be getting fewer and fewer as the years go by. What a shame. I added your image to one of my favorites.

What a wonderful capture and beautiful story, Karen! I'm so glad those neighbors stopped by when they did! F
Karen Adams replied:
Me too! There were actually half a dozen caterpillars on that plant! When I sold the house, the first thing the new owners did was to rip out all of those plants. I haven't gone back again. It's too sad!

What a wonderful macro image with all the elements to make it pure beauty. The colors and patterns of the caterpillar along with the lines and texture of the leaf it is eating against the pink flowers and the blurred background achieve the perfect balance to capture the observer's attention. Congratulations ! (l/f)

Such a great photograph Karen. Wonderful mix of colours and awesome clarity. I never new Monarch caterpillars were that big and so colourful. Guess they have a big appetite in preparation for their transformation. Expertly composed and oh so beautiful...:-)
