Description
I was interested in butterflies forever, but really got 'the bug,' when my dad gave me an old Butterfly Identification book called "Common Butterflies and Skippers of Ohio." I was surprised that so many of these beauties live in my area, yet I had never seen them. Well, once you start looking for things, that is when you see them! I'm sure so many were right in front of me all those years, but I was too busy with other things to notice. When I spotted my first Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly in my backyard garden, I was forever hooked on being a butterfly chaser! I try to capture (with my camera!) as many of them as I can!
Zebra swallowtails are especially lovely with their striking black and white zebra stripes. But The Creator did not stop with that! In addition to the stripes on the wings, the butterflies body is also striped! The wings have splashes of clear blue and red along the bottoms, the feet are a pale blue and the antennae are red! Being a swallowtail they have very long tails (this one is sadly missing one) and they are a good size butterfly. That makes them easy to see, but not so easy to sneak up on. For me anyway, they seem very aware of surroundings and what they may think is danger approaching....even if it's just me with my camera. But with patience, they get used to my presence and eventually kind of ignore me.
The scientific name for Zebra Swallowtails is Eurytides marcellus, a member of the Papilionidae family, Subfamily: Papilioninae. They can be anywhere from 2 1/2 to 4" in wingspan. Caterpillars love to eat Pawpaw trees. Adults are generally found in moist low woodlands near swamps and rivers and fly to nectar plants in open fields and brushy areas like my wildflower Ohio garden!
I really appreciate you taking time to look at my artwork. Thank you so much!
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
