Description
I was quite lucky to get so close to this beautiful Orange Sulphur Butterfly. He must have really been liking this bright pink Zinnia flower! These are somewhat common butterflies and many folks may take them for granted. This views gives a deceptive impression that they are somewhat plain, but look closely and see the green eyes, the red antenna and the wonderful pink edge around the wings! The beauty of the lovely lemon yellow color fluttering around a flower garden cannot be beat!
Orange Sulphur is the common name for the formal name "Colias eurytheme." . . . . a member of the Family: Pieridae . . .Subfamily: Coliadinae
Identification of type of butterfly is quite variable. Many times the upperside of the male has a yellow with orange overlay, yellow veins, wide black border, and dark black cell spot. The female has yellow or white with irregular black border surrounding light spots. The underside hindwing spot is silver with 2 concentric dark rings, and a spot above it. The common wing Span is 1 3/8 - 2 3/4 inches .
