Pearl Crescent butterflies are very tiny ( about 1 1/2 inches)! This gives you some idea when you compare them to leaves and blades of grass. Yet even these small creatures have been made with great care by the Creator. The lovely patterns are truly special to see, especially when I can 'blow them up' with the use of a camera and macro lens.

They live in fields, woodland edges, roadsides and gardens. You can see them in Ohio in May and June, and then again in late July and September. They are found in all 88 counties of Ohio and are almost as common as the Cabbage White. The females are larger than the males and are darker with white markings on the dorsal forewings. This is a female Pearl Crescent butterfly.
