Description
A Pearl Crescent butterfly balances on a Queen Anne's Lace in my Ohio garden. Both of these things are common in Ohio, but I see great beauty in the delicate patterns of each.
Pearl Crescent
Phyciodes tharos
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Nymphalinae
Pearl Crescent males usually have black antennal knobs. The upperside of the wings are orange with black borders crossed by fine black markings making this lovely pattern. The underside of the hindwing has a dark marginal patch containing a light-colored crescent. The wing Span is 1 1/4 - 1 3/4 inches (3.2 - 4.5 cm).
Pearl Crescents are found in open areas such as pastures, road edges, vacant lots, fields, and open pine woods. They are found in Southeastern Alberta, south through Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and southeastern California to Mexico; east to southern Ontario and all the eastern United States.
