Description
This macro abstract of a Prayer Plant leaf with water droplets reveals the beauty of this wonderful houseplant in Ohio. This is one of a series of the same image cropped or displayed in differing orientations. You can see all versions in my Gallery, "Series."
The Botanical Name is Maranta leuconeura.
I have heard that Prayer Plant earned its name because of the way its leaves fold together at night, like hands closed in prayer. Its leaves unfold in the morning light, sometimes making a rustling sound. I have never actually had the great pleasure of experiencing this! Maybe someday??
The showy, oval-shaped leaves have a spectacular light-and-dark-green feathered pattern with red veins, and are often red underneath. Its leaves grow to about 5 in (12 cm) long.
