Description
This is a close-up of a flower from a Regnellii Triangularis plant: a Purple Shamrock. My mom loved this plant! She had quite the green thumb. I can't even think of living in a house without plants growing in it. One of her favorites was Purple Shamrock (Oxalis triangularis.) She grew them in large pots inside during the winter and then took them outside for Summer. They have lovely purple leaves and delicate white flowers that she could get to bloom any time of year. I inherited her plants and am doing my best to keep them going! Lucky for me, these plants are very forgiving and because they are actually bulbs, even if they are neglected and die back, they will rise again!
I found more information on these favorites at ourhouseplants.com:
Three seems to be the magic number when it comes to Oxalis. The most common species grown as a houseplant is Oxalis triangularis which has three common names, False Shamrock, Purple Shamrock and Love Plant. It has three purple heart shaped leaves, which each have three sides, that sit symmetrically to one another at the end of every petiole (or "stem")....
Despite all its positive points the Purple Shamrock is actually quite rare to find living in peoples homes.
It is much more common to grow Oxalis outside amongst your Summer Bedding, the annuals, perennials or shrubs which is how I came to learn of these little wonders.....although they did not come back after harsh winters in Ohio. It's a gardeners plant in many respects. But the reason it's not grown inside more is a bit of a mystery. It's true it's poisonous to pets, although it has a helpful magic trick by making the leaves taste awful. A little nibble of this plant and most pets wont be back for a second helping.
So, keep it high and away from little puppies and cats and you will Love it, just like I do!
