Description
When I go on walks in my Ohio neighborhood, I always notice these beautiful pops of color in neighbors' yards. I really wish I could find a spot in my yard to plant one or two or three or four of these stunning plants. They are used as a 'focal point' in landscaping, which I find very funny since I am also using it as the focal point here!
The Purpleleaf Sand Cherry (Prunus x cisterna) is an ornamental shrub/tree and considered one of the very best selections for foliage, flowers, and bird-watching.
This shrub is pretty in every season. Right from the first foliage that forms in the early spring, the three-inch leaves feature a reddish-purple coloring, and keep that beautiful color throughout summer. Even the young bark has a purplish color. These gorgeous small white flowers with a strong pink influence emerge in the spring. This plant is a member of the Rose family, and the overall look of the flowers is really pretty.
As fall comes, the leaves transition to a red-bronze hue before they drop from the plant. Their strong branch structure is still interesting throughout the winter.
Purpleleaf Sand Cherry it a wonderful plant for birds. Small, dark purple cherries form in early fall, which bring birds a calling! They love to feast on these tiny cherries. It's nice to give the birds some good food before the cold Ohio winter blows in.
The Purpleleaf Sand Cherry is a dense-growing shrub, but can also be trained into either a single stem small tree form. My yard is pretty packed with lots of different types of plants, shrubs and trees because I love so many of them . . . but I really might have to find room for one of these (or two!)
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!

Beautiful! This reminds me a little bit of our Japanese Plum Tree! First to bloom every spring! As with most spring blooms they do not last long, and oh how I wish this would! The leaves do remain different shades of red for quite a while at least. Karen, I hope my email did not upset you in any way, I sincerely apologize if it did.

Such a great blast of colour. I find calm in the starkness and beauty of the winter months, but then gladly welcome the flowing colours of spring..:-)
