Description
Question Mark Butterfly gets its name from the small silver mark on the center of each ventral hindwing. Use your imagination and you can see it! There is also a similar butterfly called a Comma, and as you can guess that silver mark is shaped like that punctuation mark.
I am pretty sure these are fairly common butterflies, but I rarely see them because when they hang from a tree, they look like a brown leaf. The magic happens when they open their wings and you see the beautiful bright orange on the dorsal side. I was so happy that this particular one was deeply enjoying my Butterfly bush (Buddleia davidii) and so very obvious for me to spot and also oblivious to my presence! As you can see, a summer garden in Ohio is a busy place and a big bumblebee went about his business on another blossom.
The fall adults hibernate over winter in hollow logs and earthen crevices. Hibernatiors like the Question Mark, the Comma and the Mourning Cloak are some of the longest lived butterflies in Ohio. The adults may live 8 months. They can often be seen flying about or sitting on the ground on sunny warm winter or early spring days. The males are attracted to mud puddles, tree sap, rotten fruit, and animal scat. They are found in the woods, wooded swamp areas, stream banks, and openings in woods.
Scientific name: Polygonia interrogationis
Family; Nymphalinae
