Description
Mikado peonies (P. lactiflora cultivar,) were introduced from Japan around 1893. The Japanese form has a notable yellow clustered center with several layers of red-pink petals. Peonies bloom in spring, usually in May in my Ohio garden. In addition to the gorgeous colors and impressive size, these flowers have a very pleasant fragrance!
A great list of types of peonies can be found at:

The description of these wonderful flowers goes as follows:
"Variety was introduced to the U.S.A. by the Japanese exhibit at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. Extremely impressive, tall plant; wavy ruffled petals of dark rosy crimson; a centre of thick staminodes, which are dark rose red, edged and tipped in gold; considered one of the very best red peonies of its type; abundant lush green foliage, erect stems; very decorative garden plant."
These plants are tremendous treasures to me. They were planted by my great grandmother at their farm in Plain City, Ohio, probably soon after the variety was introduced to the United States. My mom used to ride a train from Boston every summer to spend weeks visiting her grandparents on the farm. She loved these plants and she and my dad very carefully transplanted them to their home when the farm was sold. They dug several of them up and gave them to me over 30 years ago. Since that time, they have moved from one house to another and still refuse to give in to my probable incompetence in transplanting them!
I am so grateful every Spring when I can look out my windows and see these chains to my past. They anchor my life and help me to remember . . . .
Thank you so much for looking at my artwork here. I truly appreciate your time!
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
