Description
Last year, about a dozen Milkweed plants sprang up around my mailbox. Since I love Monarch butterflies and know the importance of these plants to their survival I let them bloom away! It looked a lot like a jungle by the end of the summer as they grow quite tall. I collected seeds and spread them in back where they won't be quite so obvious and I have lots of them now. I have been careful to just keep half a dozen around the mailbox and they are attracting Monarchs and Red Admirals. It is fun to see folks stop and pull out their cell phones to get a picture for themselves of the butterflies!
The Red Admiral butterfly (Vanassa atalanta) can be found in all 88 counties of Ohio. They are 'common' in urban areas, gardens, woodland edges and fields near woods. This was taken July 5, 2019 on a very hot morning! They are a variety of 'Brushfooted' butterflies who are attracted to beautiful garden flowers, fruit and mud puddles (which act as a drinking fountain for delicate butterflies!) They are fast and erratic fliers which makes them a challenge to photograph, unless they are really intent on the nectar of a favored flower.
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
