Description
The Red-spotted purple butterfly (Limenitis arthemis) is a polytypic species of North American brush-footed butterfly. They are common throughout much of the eastern United States. This lovely butterfly has red spots on its underside and the top of the wings are notable for their iridescent blue markings which you can see here are really striking and so lovely!
This shot was taken several years ago, and I unfortunately have not seen another one since. . . . a common thought I have about all my beautiful little butterfly friends . . . they are the first to suffer from the carelessness of humans in the treatment of our wondrous Earth!
'Astyanax' Red-spotted Purple
Limenitis arthemis astyanax
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Limenitidinae
