Description
The northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) is also called the common cardinal, redbird, and Virginia nightingale. They are quite common in Ohio and are our state bird. My father always preferred the female's more subtle beauty and thought the males were somewhat chicken letting the females go first to his bird feeder to make sure there was no danger there. The males' bright red certainly offers them no camouflage!
Cardinals are monogamous birds that may mate for life. If the pair is able to produce healthy offspring, they will probably remain together, although they may divorce if necessary to find a more suitable mate. A mated pair is often seen feeding together, with the male gently offering a seed to his mate in a kiss-like gesture, (which would have made my father very happy to see!)
Cardinal pairs remain together year-round and join with other northern cardinals to form large flocks in the winter. It is always thrilling to look out on a snowy day to see a dozen or more of these beauties in a wintery landscape. A flock of cardinals can be called a college, conclave, radiance, or Vatican.
I have come to really enjoy the poetry I can find on so many different topics. I love this one that can be found on Hello Poetry:

Coffee With A Cardinal
Cardinal
Oh, Cardinal
You great scarlet bird.
You hop along my porch rail
But you don't say a word.
Defiant
So Defiant
Of nature's camouflage.
There is no way to hide
Your bright red entourage.
Orange
Bright Orange.
Your sharp pointy beak.
Gathers the worms and the seeds
All the meals that you seek.
Feed
Feed her.
This mate that you court.
Such a noble young man
You dance and cavort.
Sing
Sing sweet
You and your friends
I'll love your songs every morning
'Til winter comes 'round again.
Babies
Your babies
I'll meet them come next year.
When in the Fall, they'll alight on my porch
And bring my morning's cheer.
Cardinal
Oh, Cardinal
I'm so glad you're here, you see.
I knew your parents and now you have come
Singing just for me.

What an outstanding image of a gorgeous red cardinal Karen!! love the way you frame this picture. the white floral appears like shinning stars in the night sky and the cardinal is like a blood full moon that outshine the surrounding jewels. fantastic visual effect too. i felt the message is be yourself and be different. it is fine to stand out of the crowd and not be the same as everyone else!!
