Description
Forsythia blooms are a sure sign that Spring is here in Ohio. The golden yellow shines like a beacon through the gray that has shrouded the land since late November. Forsythia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Oleaceae (olive family). There are about 11 species, mostly native to eastern Asia, but one native to southeastern Europe. I love that the scientific name is also the common name (makes me feel a bit smarter!) The genus is named after William Forsyth (1737–1804), a Scottish botanist who was royal head gardener and a founding member of the Royal Horticultural Society.
Forsythia are deciduous shrubs that typically grow to a height of 3-10 feet. They are very common around my home, as many people love the glorious display and announcement of the arrival of Spring.
I found it interesting that these plants are of Asian origin, as I think this image has a feel of art from that area! . . .
I have created 3 versions of this image. This is the third version. The original is called "Spring Forsythia." The other version has a simple black border. You can find all three together in my Series Gallery.
