The main street in our Columbus, Ohio neighborhood is lined with wonderful Red Maple trees. (Acer rubrum) This species and the Silver Maple are sometimes referred to as the "soft maples." Their bright red flowers make these trees conspicuous in early spring and spectacular in autumn with leaves that become scarlet to orange in color. They grow in moist soils in swamps, bottomlands, uplands and (fingers crossed) so far are doing well as street trees.

As I walked along this street on an overcast day in April I could not stop admiring the delicate blush of these winged seeds and once again I found myself hurrying back home to grab my camera to head back out to try to capture this beauty of nature...just hanging around waiting for someone to take its picture!

(PS I also want to say, that I did not take this in a studio . . . the background is actually the cloudy sky and the filtered sun's rays provided lovely lighting!)

I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
