Description
Mom and Dad met when she came to Columbus, Ohio from Boston after college. She was Mary and he was Joseph in their church nativity scene Christmas 1950. They were married 10 months later. One year later their first daughter was born and within five years they had three energetic little ones running around. Dad worked and went to Columbus College of Art and Design at night. We lived in a tiny happy house. We didn't have much money, but that was never an issue and we were always laughing and going to church and camping out.
Mom and dad were always laughing and working and kissing. At night mom would tuck us in always saying "Sweet Dreams," just like her mother had done with her. Later I learned that she and dad made a promise to always say "Sweet Dreams" to each other at night and never go to bed angry at each other. Over their bed hung a framed embroidery by her mother that said "Sweet Dreams."
When they were in their 80s they moved to a retirement center and had to leave the church they had belonged to for almost 50 years. They joined Williams Street United Methodist church and got busy fitting in there. They heard a young song writer, Chad sing one Sunday and afterwards went up to tell him what they thought of his singing. He admits he was a little worried when he saw this little old couple making their way towards him! To his surprise they had nothing but kind words about his singing and told him that he was truly a gifted artist. Well, they of course, became friends.
One day, mom (never shy) went up to Chad and told him that he should write a song called "Sweet Dreams." She told him about our family history with that phrase, but she said she didn't care what he wrote, just call it "Sweet Dreams." He wrote the song and played it at church to their great delight!
They were married 62 years and kept their promise. Dad died in November and mom died 100 days later. At her service we played a video of Chad singing their song. Our family continues to say Sweet Dreams each night to each other and we feel their presence every time.
Sweet Dreams
Inside your eyes reside my history,
wells of promise and the best of me
Decades of holidays and covered ground,
and still it's your eyes that lay me down.
Sweet dreams, my love, sweet dreams.
Sometimes love can be just as simple as it seems.
You breathe in me, your heart glued in my seams,
so rest now, and dream of perfect things.
Snapshots of memories and mother's smiles;
heartaches, rough times and winding miles,
But faith in greater things and God above
thickened the robes that wrap us tight and snug.
Sweet dreams, my love, sweet dreams.
Sometimes love can be just as simple as it seems.
You breathe in me, your heart glued in my seams,
so rest now, and dream of perfect things.
Close your eyes, my love, close your eyes.
Let your soul swell to the size of sky;
Ascend the depths of heaven's steps,
and be cradled in these celestial wings.
Inside your eyes reside my history,
wells of promise and the best of me
Decades of holidays and covered ground,
and still it's your eyes that lay me down.

This is very touching Karen... I read your description and it touched me deeply. Your mother and father were special people and knew the importance of marriage.... Sorry to say that is very lacking today with many couples.... Thanks so much for posting this.... I think your message is a very important one... FV
Karen Adams replied:
Thank you so much, Nick....it is funny that you looked at this yesterday, because I happened to listen to the song again earlier that day. It always makes me cry, but takes me so close to them and I feel their presence!!

Wow! Another amazing story Karen! Makes my heart swell to think of the love my one family has had these 40yrs of marriage. I was not blessed with such a sweet family history but vowed my own family would be different. With God's help it has been. I hope the legacy will reach into my children and grand children's lives. Love your beautiful image of your grandmother's work! f/l!! :D
