Description
The Poppy's Secret
Hairy foliage seems a weed
as it slowly rises from the dirt
In the Spring garden
Tall strong stems stretch upward
A round and hairy globe forms on top
Slowly, warmed by morning sun's rays
A few begin to split open and unfold
Ever so slowly
Like a gift being carefully opened
Crinkled wrapping paper
Doesn't hide the present
It is the present!
A delicate yet bold beauty
Vibrant and stunning
For just a short time
Then turning brown
It dies away
Hiding from the hot Summer sun
Reviving just briefly in Autumn's rains
Sleeping under winter's blanket
Faithfully awakening
To warm Spring showers
A promise quietly fulfilled
For those who wait.
The Oriental Poppy (Papaver Orientale) does not produce any narcotic alkaloids such as morphine or codeine. Many garden Oriental poppies are actually hybrids between P. bracteatum and P. pseudo-orientale. The pleasure they give is of natural beauty and the only side-effects are happy smiles and cheerfulness towards others!
