Description
I have a Serviceberry tree next to my driveway in Ohio. Each May it hangs heavy with berries and the tree literally seems to be a moving creature from all of the birds grabbing as many berries as they can! The tree moves and shakes with many kinds of hungry creatures; mostly birds, but sometimes a chipmunk or two as well. I was really excited when I saw there were Cedar Waxwings on this day. I think they are truly beautiful birds . . . I love the subtle coloring accented with those bright dips of red and yellow.
I thought I was lucky to get two in one shot, but then I read about Cedar Waxwings on the Audubon website:
"With thin, lisping cries, flocks of Cedar Waxwings descend on berry-laden trees and hedges, to flutter among the branches as they feast. These birds are sociable at all seasons, and it is rare to see just one waxwing. Occasionally a line of waxwings perched on a branch will pass a berry back and forth, from bill to bill, until one of them swallows it. This species has a more southerly range than the Bohemian Waxwing, and is a familiar visitor to most parts of this continent south of the Arctic."
Boy, I want to see them passing berries to each other now! Unfortunately, the birds are voracious and the berries only last about two days . . . so I will have to look forward to watching for that next year!
Cedar Waxwing common name
Bombycilla cedrorum
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
