Description
Wabi-Sabi is an idea that exists in Japanese philosophy, which is the act of embracing the flawed or the imperfect. "Perfection is through imperfection." The struggle with the concept of perfection is seen in many Japanese art forms. This is an underlying philosophy behind the pottery art of kintsugi. Instead of throwing away broken pieces of a shattered vase or jar, parts are mended back together with gold lacquer. They highlight and celebrate the broken imperfection instead of discarding it.
I really love contemplating these concepts. The article, 'The Japanese Art of Kintsugi: Perfection is imperfection' by Ryan Landes-Gilman is thought-provoking for sure. I love this statement in his article,
"Perfection, as it is portrayed in the Western media, is not perfection. There is no perfect love, no perfect beauty. But, without the presence of imperfections, the wonders of the world would not be so breathtaking." Amen to that!
Life is tough and we make it even more difficult and stressful by striving for some notion of 'perfection.' Life is messy and so imperfect . . . we shouldn't discard or step over or ignore or belittle things that don't fit that strange invented word.
Truer words were never spoken, written or sung: Everything is Beautiful in its own way! I don't think I can say it any better than this:
Everything is beautiful in its own way
Like a starry summer night or a snow covered winter's day
Everybody's beautiful in their own way
Under God's heaven, the world's gonna find a way
There is none so blind as he who will not see
We must not close our minds, we must let our thoughts be free
For every hour that passes by, you know the world gets a little bit older
It's time to realize that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder . . .
(Songwriters: Ray Stevens / H. R. Ragsdale)
