Description
George Washington was a great man and a man of many interests. Mount Vernon, his home and burial place is located in Fairfax county, Virginia, overlooking the Potomac River, 15 miles south of Washington, D.C. The main house is an 18th-century two-story Georgian mansion built of wood, but given the appearance of large stone blocks by mixing sand with paint on the carefully carved thick boards. He designed the landscape at Mount Vernon, but used slave labor to maintain it. He grew edible herbs and plants on the inside of beds bordered with lovely flowering plants and rows of low boxwoods. He experimented with varieties of plants to find ones that would thrive on his estate. Large Magnolias testify to his skill at doing just this.
Through the years changes to the landscaping and the addition of flowers in the upper garden gave Washington the notion to add a special structure to this particular garden: a greenhouse. He had admired Mrs. Margaret Tilghman Carroll's greenhouse at her home, Mount Clare, near Baltimore, and requested information for his construction. She shared that information along with also sharing plants from her collection. Washington was thrilled and accepted her offer of plants, for he had recently hired a gardener "who professes a knowledge in the culture of rare plants and care of a green-house." The greenhouse kept tropical plants warm in the winter and served as a gallery of plants for the delight of Washington's guests. In the spring, the gardeners moved the plants out into the upper garden for the duration of their growing season. One guest wrote in 1799, "I saw there English grapes, oranges, limes and lemons in great perfection as well as a great variety of plants and flowers, wonderful in appearance, exquisite in their perfume and delightful to the eye..."
