My dad had terrible tremors in his hands. Yet, when he sat down with a block of wood something close to magic happened. He and mom visited Wales about twenty years ago and connected with our family heritage. He was deeply touched and inspired by Welsh Love Spoons. He wrote this description to accompany his work: Love spoons originated in Wales in the 17th century. Originally made for utilitarian use, they soon became articles to be kept and admired. They developed symbolic significance as young men made them while thinking about a young lady of their fancy. Seamen passed time away at sea again trying to show their devotion or intentions for a lady.
One explanation of their origin was that the fathers of the intended gave suitors , when they called, a knife and a piece of wood to occupy their hands wile calling...thus the term Spooning.
